In busy working environments, particularly within the IP profession, well-being can often feel like something that requires more time – time that many people simply do not have.
In our latest Jonathan’s Voice Self-Help Video, Lisa Whittleton introduces the concept of micro-habits: small, consistent actions that can be integrated into the working day to support well-being without adding pressure.
Micro-habits work by reducing cognitive load, strengthening neural pathways, and supporting regulation of the nervous system. Over time, these small actions become automatic – helping us respond to stress more effectively.
Lisa shares four practical micro-habits:
1. A 60-second grounding breath
A simple breathing technique that helps activate the vagus nerve, reduce cortisol levels, and calm the nervous system – all in under a minute.
2. A 2-minute desk reset
Clearing visual clutter, closing unnecessary tabs, and adjusting posture can significantly reduce cognitive load and improve focus.
3. Micro-movements throughout the day
Short movements such as shoulder rolls or neck stretches increase blood flow, relieve muscle tension, and support concentration.
4. A 5-minute mental reset
Taking a few minutes to prioritise tasks and reset focus can reduce feelings of overwhelm and create a greater sense of control.
These actions may seem small, but when practiced consistently, they can have a meaningful impact on the well-being of IP professionals at work.
Please consider sharing it with colleagues or within your organisation.
