Male Suicide – Myths, Action, Hope

Thursday, September  7th 12.30 -1.30 p.m 2023

This is a joint Jonathan’s Voice and IP Inclusive webinar to mark World Suicide Prevention Day. The theme for this year is again “Creating Hope through Action”. Please join Jonathan’s Voice and IP Inclusive https://ipinclusive.org.uk/ to explore how we can do that for the men we know and love.

There are many unhelpful myths and assumptions around about suicide. In this webinar we’ll be looking at some of them in relation to male mental health and suicide. A clearer understanding of the issues can put us in a better position to give meaningful support, thus creating hope that the right kind of help can be found and given.

In the first half of the webinar, Susie Bennett from the University of Glasgow’s Suicidal Behaviour Research Laboratory will explore how, during the course of her research into male suicide, many of her assumptions and pre-conceived ideas were challenged and myths dispelled. This has helped her to formulate a greater awareness  of how we, as a society and as individuals, and how she, as a woman, can offer better understanding and support.

Following this, Mark Fudge and Andrew Reeves will reflect on Susie’s comments and bring in their own experiences and insights, both as men and as mental health professionals who have worked with desperate, despairing or suicidal men.
