In November, we had the privilege of spending time with the junior attorneys at J A Kemp in their London office as part of the firm’s Junior Journal Club programme. It was a valuable opportunity to reconnect, to listen, and to shine a light on what resilience really looks like in the early stages of an IP career.
Our session, “Resilience for Real Life: Managing Workload, Pressure and Pace in IP”, explored the realities of stress for those beginning their professional journey. Rather than viewing pressure as simply “part of the job”, we looked at how individuals can develop the insight and skills that help them not just cope, but truly thrive.
Understanding stress in the IP profession
Together, we unpacked some key themes:
- The difference between helpful stress and harmful stress
Understanding this distinction allows people to recognise when pressure is motivating – and when it’s becoming unsustainable. - Common stress triggers unique to the IP profession
From tight deadlines to high levels of detail and responsibility, we explored the factors that can heighten strain for junior attorneys. - Why wellbeing is essential to performance
We discussed how sustained high-quality work depends on psychological safety, self-awareness and habits that support mental wellbeing.
Practical strategies that make a difference
We also experimented with a range of practical tools designed to help shift people from overwhelm back to clarity, focus and a sense of control. These included simple grounding techniques, ways of reframing stressful moments and small preventative habits that, over time, build long-term resilience.
One of the standout moments was our mini-mastermind. Junior attorneys shared candid, thoughtful strategies – both “in the moment” approaches and proactive wellbeing practices. The openness in the room was a testament to the culture that J A Kemp continues to nurture: one where people feel able to speak, reflect and support each other.
A culture that puts wellbeing into action
We are deeply grateful to have been invited back again this year. J A Kemp is a firm that doesn’t simply talk about wellbeing – they take meaningful, proactive steps to embed it. Their commitment to supporting their people is visible in the way they invest time, trust and space in conversations that matter.
Thank you to everyone who joined us. It was a privilege to be part of the session and to witness the dedication and care that underpins your work.
