This was the subject of the workshop delivered recently for the trainee patent attorney cohort at Appleyard Lees LLP. Is there such a thing as ‘good stress’ or are we really talking about adrenaline, focus, and motivation?
What if, instead of viewing stress purely as a negative, we saw ‘bad stress’ as our mind’s internal warning system. A signal that something may be out of alignment in our lives and that it’s time to pause, reflect, and recalibrate? These were just some of the reflections that emerged during the workshop.
Over the course of 2.5 hours, we explored the powerful role our thoughts play in shaping how we respond to challenges, and how vital they are in building and sustaining personal resilience, especially in high-pressure environments like the intellectual property profession.
The session was designed to be interactive and practical, offering space for discussion around the signs of stress, tools for self-care, and strategies for staying balanced in the early stages of a demanding career.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Yvonne Sanderson for inviting Jonathan’s Voice to return to support the Appleyard Lees team once again, and to Ashley Barker for organising such a thoughtful and welcoming event. Most of all, we are grateful to the trainees who brought openness, curiosity, and honesty to the conversation.
It was a genuine pleasure to spend time with such an engaged group. We wish you all the very best as you continue your journeys in the IP world – and remember, building resilience isn’t about being unaffected by stress, but reframing it and learning to respond with insight and compassion.
